Tear down the wall

One of the few remaining Berlin wall sections at Niederkirchnerstraße.This 150m section has been fenced off to protect it from futher wall souvenir hunters and their hammers.This shot was taken from the "east" side of that infamous border.

So folks,with the end of the year drawing close and Christmas time upon us I´d like to say thanks to everybody who has looked in on my blog and left a comment this year.Special thanks to those special people who visit everyday (you know who you are).
I may find the time to pop in over the festive season and post the odd shot but officialy the AM3 year is over for me.
I wish you all "Seasons greeting" and a "Happy new year" and I´ll be back in 2010 posting and commenting like a mad thing I promise.
I have pre-posted a couple of shots to take my blog up to Christmas eve.

@jamesy: There are a few (but not many) sections of the wall still to be seen.I was in Berlin 20 years ago just as the border opened(and the wall was still fully standing,East German border guards and all) It´s so hard these days to imagine what it realy looked like.These surviving sections help the visitor these days though !!

Guten Abend Anthony,
eine sehr interessante Aufnahme und auch der Link dazu. Sie haben die Aufnahme fast identisch wiedergegeben. Ist daß die natürliche Farbe der Pflastersteine? Sie wirken sehr bunt.

@Ted: I grew up reading books like that and the first time I was in Berlin(Jan 1990) it realy was exactly like the world in those novels.This shot was taken in one of the few places in Berlin today that still has that feeling.

Thanks for putting that bit of history in about this section of the wall. So very, very interesting and also so sad that it represents so much misery and human suffering. I suppose it has been left as a reminder and perhaps we need that. I'm not sure. It's a great and interesting shot Anthony. I'm glad that you and your family enjoyed your time there.

@Marion: Let´s not forget though Marion,lots and lots of normal "East Germans" had a perfectly normal life in the DDR.I´ve worked with many Ex-East Germans over the years and a lot of them miss many things about their old country.No unemployment for instance,free schooling from Kinder garden through to University,Clean,safe and tidy streets,even affordable holidays.All things that no one in the new united Germany can take for granted.
Of course for many people the wall,the East-West border and the style of government under which they lived was a burden they could not carry and would not tolerate but for many others the DDR was just a country where they grew up....

Nice contrasts and perspective going on here. My friend was in Berlin in business on the night the Berlin wall came down. He went to bed before the moment in history, he felt tired - I think he should get out more!!!

@Philip: I even managed to be out of the country when it happened(I´ve lived in Germany since leaving the army in Nov. 1989) I was in the UK waiting for my release papers to come through !!
